Iga Swiatek, the three-time Grand Slam champion, will face Caroline Garcia in the 2022 WTA Finals group stage. Swiatek began her quest for her first year-end championship title against Daria Kasatkina. She raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, but had to save two break points to keep it. The World No. 1 even had a couple of break points to go up 4-0, but the Russian came back to win. Swiatek clinched the set by breaking Kasatkina’s serve in the eighth game. She also got off to a fast start in the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead. She ultimately won 6-2, 6-3.
Caroline Garcia’s first round-robin match pitted her against home favourite Coco Gauff. Gauff got the match started on a high note by breaking her opponent’s serve. However, Garcia was able to recover the break immediately in the next game to tie the game. Over the next few games, the two were evenly matched on serve. With Gauff serving to stay in the set at 5-4, Garcia broke her serve and won the first set. The World No. 6 was the first to go up a break in the second set, leading 3-1, but the American fought back to make it 3-2. Garcia then took another break to go up 4-2 and didn’t give Gauff any more chances to come back, winning the match 6-4, 6-3.

The eight players at the WTA Finals 2022 have been divided into two groups, these are the Tracy Austin Group and the Nancy Richey Group. Each player will play one match against everyone in their group and the top two from each will make it through to the semi-finals. The top finisher of one group will face the second finisher of the other. The winner of those two matches will then meet in the final to decide who will win the 2022 WTA Finals crown.

The group stage action of the 2022 WTA Finals will commence on October 31 and end on November 5. The semi-finals will be played on November 6 and the final on November 7.
