To everyone's surprise, South Korea's Soonwoo Kwon recorded a stunning victory over world no. 13 Felix Auger-Aliassime when South Korea took on Canada in the first group B match.
Despite suffering an opening day defeat at the hands of Canada, South Korea can take a lot of positives into their next match against Serbia. The Canadians were almost subjected to a shock defeat against a country that has qualified for the Davis Cup finals for the very first time. In the first match, Vasek Pospisil narrowly avoided a loss against Hong Seong-Chan by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(5). It was then the clash of the star players as Felix Auger-Aliassime took on Soonwoo Kwon. Much to everyone’s surprise, it was Kwon who reigned supreme over the world no. 13 by a score of 7-6(5), 6-3. Everything was up to the doubles teams for both sides as the team of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil took on Nam Ji Sung and Song Min-Kyu. The Canadians won by a score of 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 to secure a 2-1 victory.
The absence of someone like Novak Djokovic seems to have damaged Serbia’s chances at the 2022 Davis Cup as they fell to a 3-0 defeat against Spain in their opener. With the Spaniards resting Carlos Alcaraz, Serbia had a good chance of winning a match and gaining momentum but that never came to pass. In front of a raucous crowd at Valencia’s Pabellon Fuente de San Luis, Roberto Bautista Agut won a tough 7-6(5), 7-6(5) triumph over Miomir Kecmanovic. Spain took a 1-0 lead earlier in the match when Albert Ramos-Vinolas won 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 in two hours and 54 minutes against Laslo Djere. In the doubles, Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez of Spain rallied from a set down to upset Nikola Cacic and Dusan Lajovic 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-2.
Serbia and South Korea are set to face each other in a Group B match on Thursday, September 15 in the 2022 Davis Cup. The group stage of the competition is scheduled to begin on September 13 and conclude on September 18 this year.
