Top seed Croatia did not have the best start to their 2022 Davis Cup campaign as they fell to a heavy 3-0 defeat against Italy. The Croatians fielded Borna Coric, Borna Gojo and the team of Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic. Unfortunately, neither could get a favourable result. In the first match of the group A clash, Lorenzo Musetti made short work of Borna Gojo, winning by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Coric was up next against Matteo Berrettini and while the Croatian did mount a fight, it was the Italian who won by a score of 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-1. The team of Pavic and Mektic did not fare any better as they lost 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). Croatia will face Sweden in their second group stage match.

On paper, Argentina had the much stronger squad but the Swedes’ singles players simply outplayed their opponents. Elias Ymer was the first in action and he beat Sebastian Baez 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). It was then Mikael Ymer’s turn who went up against Diego Schwartzman and recorded a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win. The doubles team of Andre Goransson and Elias Ymer failed to get the result as they lost to Maximo Gonzalez and Horacio Zeballos.
Croatia and Sweden are set to face each other in a Group A match on Thursday, September 15 in the 2022 Davis Cup. The group stage of the competition is scheduled to begin on September 13 and conclude on September 18 this year.
