Aryna Sabalenka defeated Tereza Martincova with ease on Tuesday, 6-1, 6-4, to move to 5-0 on the season (10-0 in sets). It’s interesting to note that, including the semifinal match against Irina-Camelia Begu and the final match against Linda Noskova in Adelaide a week and a half ago, she has now saved all breakpoints in each of her last three matches. The Belarusian made a fresh start when she ended her nearly two-year title drought in Adelaide after suffering many setbacks in 2022, including dropping all three finals and taking the lead in double-faults. At the Australian Open, where she has advanced to the third round on three of her last four trips, she hopes to maintain her respectable record.
In her previous four first-round matches, Shelby Rogers had gone 0-4; in Adelaide, she had lost to Zheng Qinwen and Irina-Camelia Begu (wasted set leads in either match). After defeating qualifier and world No. 240 Arianne Hartono, 6-4, 6-3, and recovering from a set down in the second, she broke the streak. Although the American has advanced to the quarterfinals of a major tournament twice, Melbourne hasn’t been particularly kind to her. The only time she advanced past the first two rounds of the main draw after six previous appearances was in 2021, when she upset the 21st seed Anett Kontaveit, 6-4, 6-3, and advanced to the fourth round.
