This week, Anastasia Potapova forced Zheng Qinwen to play a proper marathon that lasted well over three and a half hours. In the end, she defeated the Russian by scores of 6-7, 7-5, and 7-6 to secure her spot in the Adelaide main draw. For the comparatively new member of the top 30, the past two weeks at Memorial Drive Tennis Center have been quite eventful. She recently survived a match point to defeat Victoria Azarenka in the second round in straight sets after earlier defeating former World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit in a third set tiebreaker. She hopes to continue where she left off in Australia last year, when, while ranked 126th, she made it to her first WTA semifinal in Melbourne.
Shelby Rogers lost to Karolina Pliskova in convincing straight sets despite needing to advance to the Adelaide main draw for the second week in a row. She was given the chance to try and improve on her Adelaide International 1 performance, which included a 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 loss to Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round. Since the beginning of 2022, she has finished 11 of her 20 main draw campaigns in the first round alone. The 30-year-old has had just three quarterfinal or better finishes during this time, the majority of which was her finish as Daria Kasatkina’s runner-up in San Jose in August.

The two will face each other for the first time at the 2023 Adelaide International 2. Shelby Rogers shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially on hard courts. In the 2022 season, she defeated six different members of the top 30, including Maria Sakkari, the world’s No. 6, in three sets in Adelaide on her way to the quarterfinals. Zheng Qinwen, 20, should be able to get past her adversary who is ten years older.
