When it comes to tournament draws, Roberto Carballes Baena has had a difficult start to the year. In the opening rounds of both the Australian Open and the ATP Pune, he faced top seed Marin Cilic, who is currently ranked first in the world. In Pune’s opening round, he defeated none other than Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets for his lone victory of the year. The Spaniard is hoping to turn things around during the South American swing after having little success on the main tour lately. In fact, he won his lone ATP title in Quito five years ago. He has performed admirably in this stage over the past few seasons.
As a result of losing all seven sets to Karen Khachanov in the Australian Open first round a few weeks ago, Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who had his best season on the main tour in 2022, would be dissatisfied with how the new season has started. During the South American clay swing in 2022, the 26-year-old Spaniard competed in two matches but lost both of them in straight sets to Yannick Hanfmann in the Rio de Janeiro qualifying match (2-6 4-6) and Facundo Bagnis in the opening round of the ATP Santiago tournament (3-6 0-6).
