James Duckworth

James Duckworth is an Australian tennis player. He is currently ranked World No.46 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), which is also his highest-career ranking, achieved in January 2022. He largely depends on his tricky serves in his style of play and believes in hitting the groundstrokes with depth to challenge his opponent and keep them pinned to the baseline which limits them to lack of movement.

Duckworth made his foray into tennis with his junior career at the age of 13. He featured in his first ITF tournament in December 2005 where he made a first round exit after losing to Sebastian Bell. It took him two years since then to make his first final appearance in Manila 2007, where he was forced to retire in the third set due to an injury. He won three junior singles titles in hard-court tournaments -- Lautoka, Kuching and Manila -- but one his most commendable performances was at the 2010 Roland Garros Junior Championships where he reached the semi-finals and reached World No.7 ranking. 

He broke into the top 300 senior rankings for the first time in 2011 with his ATP and Grand Slam debut coming in 2012. The Australian won his first Challenger title at the Lexington Challenger in 2014 which was followed by Charlottesville Challenger in the same year, helping him to break into the top 100 rankings for the first-time in 2015. 

Best Grand Slam performance 

Duckworth has been a regular feature at the Grand Slam tournaments since 2013. But 2017 was a challenging year for him personally as he underwent a foot surgery following his first round exit in Australian Open. 

2021, however, turned out to be a fruitful year for him as he made his maiden appearance at the Olympics and also reached the third round of a Grand Slam -- Wimbledon -- for the first time. He had defeated Sam Querrey to reach the third round but lost to Italian L.Sonego in third set to crash out of the major championship. It was, remarkably, his first appearance at the third round of a Grand Slam event in 25 major appearances.
