Nuno Borges and Nick Chappell will face each other in the first round of the 2023 Mexican Open on Wednesday, March 1.
Nuno Borges triumphed in a Mexican Challenger competition held in Monterrey last week; he didn’t lose a set the entire competition. He will undoubtedly benefit from the confidence and experience he gained from this victory as he gets ready to make his debut in Acapulco. Even at the highest level, he has been fiercely competitive in every game he has played this year. He defeated Lorenzo Sonego in the opening round of the Australian Open, competed admirably in the Davis Cup against the hot Jiri Lehecka, and advanced to the second round of the Delray Beach Open as a qualifier. In the second half of 2022, the top-ranked Portuguese player established himself on the main tour and eventually rose to the top 100. The following months saw only steady improvement, and he is now sitting at his career-high ranking of #85.
Over the weekend at ATP Acapulco, there were a few unexpected results, and Nick Chappell was in charge of one of them. In the first round of qualifying, he shocked everyone by defeating Steve Johnson in three sets. In the subsequent round, he delivered a bagel to Jose Statham to earn a spot in the main draw. The American who was born in Canada has competed in a sizable amount of ITF-level professional tennis in Mexico, particularly in Cancun. In fact, Chun Hsin Tseng’s lone previous main-draw outing on the main tour came in the other Mexican ATP event in Los Cabos last year. He competed there as a qualifier and fell to Chun Hsin Tseng, who was ranked #84 at the time, in the first round.
