Marcos Giron and Michael Mmoh will face each other in the first round of the 2023 Mexican Open on Monday, February 28.
With the exception of a devastating loss to Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open, Marcos Giron has consistently displayed grit in every match this year. In his subsequent three ATP-level tournaments, in Auckland, Dallas, and Delray Beach, he has advanced to the quarterfinals after coming close to doing so in Adelaide last month. The American will be hoping to keep up his impressive form in ATP events this year as he prepares for his third appearance in Acapulco. He advanced to the second round of the competition in his inaugural campaign in 2020, and more recently, in 2022, he went one step further by reaching the quarterfinals.
The 2023 season has gotten off to a promising start for Michael Mmoh, as his strong early-season play has already landed him a spot in the top 100 of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career. His impressive victories over Denis Shapovalov in Delray Beach and Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open helped him reach a quarterfinal for the first time ever on the main tour. The ATP Acapulco main-draw debutant had only ever reached three quarterfinals on the main tour prior to 2023. He defeated fellow Americans Ernesto Escobedo (R1) and Peter Polansky in Los Cabos during one of these quarterfinal appearances in 2018, which took place on Mexican soil.
