Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Dubai Open on February 22.
In both of this week’s matches, Elena Rybakina had to put in more than 90 minutes of work, and she lost exactly seven games to Bianca Andreescu and Marie Bouzkova. She should be happy, though, to have defeated the opposition in straight sets and earned her ninth and tenth victories of this so-far bittersweet season. After reaching the Australian Open finals last month, the Kazakh, who was denied ranking points for her Wimbledon victory, finally accumulated enough to make her top-10 debut. She hopes to duplicate her success from 2020 in Dubai, where she advanced to the WTA 500 final as a rookie and fell just short in a deciding set tiebreak.
After easily defeating Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Coco Gauff increases her total number of victories for the season to ten. Even though she only won 61% of her first serves, it was more than enough to defeat the Belarusian 6-0, 6-4. The teen hopes to reach her second quarterfinal in Dubai to match her performance from 2021, when the match was also a WTA 1000 event. After making it to 11 quarterfinals in the previous 13 months, she is overjoyed. However, the finalist at Roland-Garros had to wait until last month to win her first championship since mid-2021. In Auckland, she won five matches in a row and dropped just two games in either the semifinal against Danka Kovinic or the championship match against Rebeka Masarova.

1-0 is the advantage for Coco Gauff. In August, they crossed paths in Toronto’s second round. Elena Rybakina was under pressure to follow up her victory at Wimbledon in her second match. The American needed almost three hours to squeeze out, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, after wasting four match points in the second set.
