Dusan Lajovic and Ugo Carabelli will face each other in the first round of the 2023 Chile Open on Tuesday, February 28.
In this year’s South American clay swing, Dusan Lajovic is 3-0 in first-round matches, and he would have had a significant result if it weren’t for the world #2 Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated him in the quarterfinals of back-to-back tournaments in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Dusan Lajovic’s confidence, which he sorely needed, has been greatly boosted by the victories during the South American clay swing. He has struggled to demonstrate his elite tennis since the pandemic break and had only one main tour quarterfinal result in the entire 2022 season.
The former runner-up in the Monte Carlo Masters is scheduled to compete in Santiago for the first time in the hopes of continuing his strong play and rising in the ATP rankings. The former world #23 managed to re-enter the top 80 after a few successful weeks in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, after dropping outside the top 100 last November.
All four weeks of the South American clay swing this week required Camilo Ugo Carabelli to compete in the qualifying rounds. To his credit, he did well to advance to the main draw twice, including this week in Santiago, where he defeated Thiago Seyboth Wild and Facundo Diaz Acosta. The Argentine took advantage of his chance in the main draw by beating a struggling Daniel Elahi Galan. He had a similar experience during the Buenos Aires qualifying rounds. His previous victory, an upset of Aslan Karatsev at the 2022 French Open, was his first of two victories in as many first-round matches in tour-level competitions.
