Daniil Medvedev and Borna Coric will face each other in the quarter-final of the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships on Thursday, March 2.
Daniil Medvedev defeated Alexander Bublik, who had advanced to the ATP Marseille semifinals the previous week, and lucky loser Matteo Arnaldi with scores of 6-4 6-2. He had failed in his previous two attempts to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP Dubai, but these victories allowed him to do so. The challenge now is to maintain this high level of play and confidence when he inevitably faces Novak Djokovic and other top players after his dominant performances so far in 2023. The Russian has been nothing short of exceptional during his dominant performances.
The world’s seventh-ranked player has not lost more than four games in 29 of the 33 sets he has won this year, but in the only two bad matches he has had in the past two months—against Novak Djokovic in the ATP Adelaide semifinals and Sebastian Korda in the third round of the Australian Open—he failed to win even a set. Despite all of his difficulties in a trying and forgettable 2022, this year has gotten off to such a strong start for him. He is currently on an 11-match winning streak and has won 16 of his last 18 matches. His winning streak includes title-winning runs in back-to-back weeks in Rotterdam (500) and Doha (250, Middle East).
Thanasi Kokkinakis’ six-match winning streak in the Middle East came to an end as Borna Coric extended his winning streak against him to three games. In a closely contested three-set match that was decided by scores of 6-7 6-3 7-5 after almost three hours, he did not encounter a breakpoint. The current Cincinnati Masters champion has played three quarterfinal matches in Dubai before, winning two of them, unlike his Russian opponent. In 2015 he defeated Andy Murray, and in 2019 he defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili. The former world No. 12 has gone 4-0 against top-10 players in knockout competitions since regaining his form and confidence in the second half of 2022. He has defeated Rafael Nadal, Felix Auger Aliassime, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
