Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Bublik will face each other in the second round of the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships on Wednesday, March 1.
For the second consecutive week in the Middle East, Daniil Medvedev faced a player outside the top-100 in the opening round and won in straight sets. He defeated Liam Broady 6-4 6-3 in the second round (R1 bye) of the ATP Doha tournament last week, and this week, he dispatched of the inexperienced Matteo Arnaldi 6-4 6-2 in the opening round of the ATP Dubai tournament. This is just one of the Russian’s numerous convincing victories on the main tour in 2023. Over the past eight weeks, he has mostly been in dominant form, despite a few discouraging losses and some challenging days. He has only lost a maximum of four games, in fact.
He attained the position of world number one for the first time in his career in 2022, during this period of the calendar. This resulted from Novak Djokovic’s early exit from the Dubai tournament and his semifinal appearance in Acapulco. He wasn’t playing at his best during that time, though, and a few weeks later he dropped to number two. Following his recent back-to-back victories in Rotterdam and Doha earlier this month, the 2021 US Open champion is probably feeling more assured than he has since the Australian Open in January. As a result of these outstanding outcomes, he was able to return to the top 10 rankings just a few days after falling outside of it for the first time since 2019.
When Alexander Bublik finally had the chance to play an underdog this year, he dominated, losing only one game to Alexandar Lazarov in the opening round of the ATP Dubai tournament, 6-1 1-0, before retiring. Just last week in Marseille, where he advanced to the semifinals by defeating in-form players like Gregoire Barrere and Grigor Dimitrov, the big-serving Kazakh snapped an eight-match losing streak and earned his first victory of the 2023 campaign.

Daniil Medvedev has a 5-0 lead. On his best days, Alexander Bublik can be a challenge to beat, especially when he serves well and is driven to win. However, the Russian has experience beating the Kazakh before, and given his current form, it is anticipated that he will succeed again in their upcoming match.
