Even though Andrey Rublev advanced to the Australian Open quarterfinals, it appears that this accomplishment only served to conceal his form’s flaws. He has actually had a difficult start to 2023, dropping four of his first five ATP-level matches and only succeeding in defeating a worn-out Tallon Griekspoor by saving match points in Doha last week. In retrospect, he also had a lot of luck during his Australian Open campaign. He defeated Dan Evans, who was out of shape, Dominic Thiem, and Emil Ruusuvuori, the underdog, before taking advantage of Holger Rune’s inability to maintain a sizable lead in the super tiebreaker of their round of 16 match.

The top-ranked Russian is eager to get back on track and put on a strong performance in Dubai to reaffirm his position as one of the best players at the ATP 500 level in recent years after suffering a disappointing first-round exit in the season’s opening ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam two weeks ago. In each of his previous three main-draw campaigns, the world’s fifth-ranked player advanced at least as far as the quarterfinals, giving him a strong record there. Despite the presence of some notable players, such as Novak Djokovic, he also won his biggest title of the 2022 season at this tournament.

Over the past few years, Filip Krajinovic has developed into a rather passive performer on the main tour, posting a fair number of average results while also picking up a few significant victories that have helped him maintain a respectable position in the ATP rankings. The former runner-up at the Paris Masters is perfect 4-0 in first-round matches in Dubai, and his best performance there was making the semifinals in his first season here in 2018.
