For the first time since the French Open last year, Alexander Zverev has won back-to-back official matches, allowing him to advance to the quarterfinals in Dubai. After the French Open, he had to end his 2022 season due to an injury, and upon his return earlier this year, he ran into problems, which is not surprising. The top-ranked German has not played to his usual calibre thus far this year. However, his most recent performance indicates that he might be headed in the right direction for regaining his form. He lost three-set matches in Rotterdam and Doha to eventual semifinalist Tallon Griekspoor and eventual runner-up Andy Murray, respectively, but defeated Christopher O’Connell and Jiri Lehecka in Dubai.

The 25-year-old has proven his talent across a variety of surfaces and at all levels, unlike some of his teammates. He came close to winning his first grand slam at the US Open in 2020, and when he rose as high as #2, he had a remote chance of becoming the world’s top player in 2022. The 2021 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist has an impressive 48-20 win-loss record in the quarterfinals of tour-level competitions; his most recent victory came in four sets at the 2022 French Open over the hot-shot Carlos Alcaraz.

Earlier this year, Lorenzo Sonego suffered a run of bad luck and lost a few close matches to elite players, but he persisted and kept putting forth excellent performances. In the second round of the ATP Dubai, he defeated Felix Auger Aliassime 7-6 6-4, demonstrating that his perseverance had finally paid off. Although the Italian still has a losing record in 2023 (5/6), overall, his play has been impressive. He faced off against players like Daniil Medvedev, Hubert Hurkacz, and Andy Murray. He has achieved two ATP quarterfinal finishes, including his most recent one this week in Dubai.
