After defeating the threatening Zhizhen Zhang, who had previously caused significant upsets and reached the quarterfinals at the Madrid Masters earlier this month, Arthur Fils advanced to the second round of the ATP Lyon tournament on his debut. He received two breaks of serve in the opening set and was one game away from 6-3, 6-2 victory in the second. The gifted French teen is currently unbeaten in all four games he has played so far this year on the main tour. He previously achieved back-to-back semifinal finishes at domestic competitions in Montpellier and Marseille in February and recently advanced to the second round at Rome Masters.

Mikael Ymer ran into Richard Gasquet in the first round of the ATP Lyon tournament just a few days after suffering a discouraging straight-set loss to the Frenchman in the quarterfinals of the Bordeaux Challenger. But this time, Ymer was able to flip the script and triumph, reversing the previous result, 6-3 7-5. Ymer made his first appearance at any level in the Bordeaux Challenger last week after retiring due to an ankle injury at the Miami Masters in March. He last had a successful run of consecutive main-draw wins in ATP tournaments during the second week of January, when he advanced to the quarterfinals in Adelaide.
