Jannik Sinner and Arthur Fils will take on each other in the semi-finals of the 2023 ATP Montpellier Open on February 11.
Jannik Sinner, who was only playing in his first match of the season, defeated fellow countryman Lorenzo Sonego with ease to advance into the semifinal of the ATP Montpellier tournament for the first time in three tries. In the first round, he was given a bye, and Marton Fucsovics gave him a walkover in the second. World No. 17 lost his previous quarterfinal match of the 2023 season to Sebastian Korda in straight sets in the first leg of ATP Adelaide last month. He only made his first semifinal appearance of the 2022 season in Umag in July. The world’s top-ranked Italian has had an outstanding career-to-date on indoor hard courts, where he currently has a 64/24 record. At the lower-level circuits, he once put together an impressive 11-match winning streak on indoor hard courts. Four of his seven title-winning seasons on the main tour have also occurred on these surfaces.
After defeating the in-form Quentin Halys in straight sets in the quarterfinal of the ATP Montpellier event this week, 7-6 6-3, Arthur Fils, the first player born in 2004 to reach an ATP event’s quarterfinal, becomes the youngest player from France to appear in a semifinal on the main tour since Richard Gasquet in 2004. This week, the gifted French teenager defeated three-time ATP Montpellier champion Richard Gasquet in the first round to earn his first top-50 victory. He then defeated former runner-up Roberto Bautista Agut with ease in the second round, 7-5 7-5 and 6-3 6-4, respectively. When you consider the 18-year-age old’s and prior experience on the main tour, what he has accomplished in Montpellier this week is truly amazing. He only ever competed in the main draw of a tour-level event once, at the Paris Masters in November of last year, where he fell to Fabio Fognini in a three-set match.
