Iga Swiatek and Danielle Collins will take on each other in the round of 16 of the 2023 WTA Qatar Open on February 15.
It’s time to defend the eight titles Iga Swiatek won the season before, and Doha is the first stop. She won the WTA 1000 title last year by defeating Daria Kasatkina, Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari, and Anett Kontaveit in straight sets. This marked the start of her legendary 37-match winning streak, which came to an end at Wimbledon. Since the beginning of 2022, she has won 73 of 84 games, including going 6-2 last month. The current Roland-Garros and US Open champion is unlikely to be happy with her recent performances in Australia; after losing to Jessica Pegula in the United Cup final and Elena Rybakina in the fourth round of Melbourne, she exited the tournament.
After losing to Jelena Ostapenko in the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open, Danielle Collins earned her first victory since the Australian Open. Elise Mertens, the 2019 champion, was defeated by her in the opening match of her Doha debut, 6-4, 7-6, with a set point saved in the tiebreak. With a combined total of 16 aces and 18 unforced errors, neither player held back. She started the season with four victories from four competitions, making it as far as Adelaide’s quarterfinal and the third round of the Australian Open. In the previous 12 months, the 2022 Australian Open semifinalist only advanced to three quarterfinals, two of which occurred on American soil: Miami in March and San Diego in October.
