American tennis player Marcos Giron put up an absolute treat of a match in the first round of the the 2023 Adelaide International 1 on Monday against Frenchman Richard Gasquet. The match ended 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), 7-5 in the American’s favour. Giron recorded seven aces and converted two out of 12 break points. He also recorded 75% and 72% on the first and second serves respectively. “That was a battle. That’s one way to start the year. I would have liked to have won in straights, I was up a mini break there in the second,” Giron said. “But Richard is a phenomenal player. He’s a great player, so the match is never over until it’s over. He had match points in the third. I was just happy I was able to give myself a chance to get the win.”
After making it through two rounds of qualifiers, home favourite Alexei Popyrin arguably registered the biggest upset of the tournament so far as he defeated second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime on Monday. The score at the end of the match was 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in the Australian’s favour. “A really good win for me, especially coming off last season where I only had five wins on the circuit,” Popyrin said. “For me it’s a very, very important win. I know I have the level to play against guys like that, and today just proved it. I’m happy. I’m not surprised, to be honest, but I’m happy with it.”
