Belgium's star man David Goffin failed to make an impact against Australia in the first match, losing in straight sets to Alex di Minaur.
Kevin Krawietz and Tim Putz won the deciding doubles match in a tiebreaker in Hamburg on Wednesday, giving Germany its first Davis Cup triumph against France since 1938. The pair defeated Nicolas Mahut and Arthur Rinderknech 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(1) to win their first Group C match 2-1. In the other group match, Australia defeated Belgium 3-0. Two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the knockout rounds, which will be held in Malaga from November 22 to 27. Germany had lost their previous eight games with France, and captain Michael Kohlmann was delighted to achieve ‘positive history’ with their first victory in 84 years.
Belgium fell to a heavy defeat against powerhouse Australia in their first Davis Cup Finals tie this season. Zizou Bergs started things off for the Belgians against Jason Kubler but fell to a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Aussie. Next it was Alex di Minaur’s turn against David Goffin which saw the former record a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win. In the doubles, Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell beat the team of Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen.
Germany and Belgium are set to face each other in a Group C match on Friday, September 16 in the 2022 Davis Cup. The group stage of the competition is scheduled to begin on September 13 and conclude on September 18 this year.
