In four sets this week against the inexperienced (on the main tour) Constant Lestienne and Quentin Halys, Novak Djokovic gave up 17 games. In his second-round match against the powerful Frenchman, he fell behind 2-5 in the first set and was unable to break in the second set, which ended in a score of 7-6, 7-6. The Serbian lost in the quarterfinals in his opening match of the 2022 campaign, falling to Jiri Vesely in Dubai in straight sets, which also cost him the top spot in the ATP rankings. Last year, the world’s fifth-ranked player got better with each passing week, and he went 7-1 in quarterfinal matches since Dubai, with his lone defeat coming in four sets to his archrival Rafael Nadal at the French Open.
With victories of 2-6 6-4 6-3 and 6-4 6-3, respectively, Denis Shapovalov advanced to the ATP Adelaide quarterfinals against the unpredictable but reliable Rinky Hijikata and Roman Safiullin. Last year, Novak Djokovic, a Canadian, put on some memorable performances and found success there before being expelled. He was a member of the Canadian team that won the ATP Cup and later advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, where he came within one set of defeating Rafael Nadal, the eventual champion.
