Danka Kovinic advances to her second quarterfinal in as many tournaments and her fifth in as many games. The Montenegrin player came back from a set and 0-2 down to defeat Anna Bondar, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, without having to face a breakpoint in the third set, after defeating Viktorija Golubic in straight sets in the first round. After a dry spell in the middle of last year, when she lost two consecutive matches from Eastbourne in June to 125K Budapest in late September, the 28-year-old has polished up her act. Since then, she has returned to form with semifinal finishes in Parma and 125K Colina, a final finish in 125K Buenos Aires, and an Auckland semifinal.
Alycia Parks wins 16 of her last 18 indoor matches and extends her winning streak to 12 matches after narrowly escaping a challenge from Petra Martic, a former player ranked in the top 20. Without facing a breakpoint in the second set and fending off all three of them in the third, she defeated the Croat 2-6, 7-6, 6-2. The American’s ranking was outside the top 200 at the beginning of 2022, and as recently as November, it had only risen as high as 150th. However, she has recently spent a lot of time in Europe, which includes her first WTA quarterfinal in Ostrava (as a qualifier), where she defeated Karolina Pliskova and Maria Sakkari.

Danka Kovinic has been in decent form since the start of the 2023 season. She might have been eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open but the Montenegrin made it as far as the semi-finals of the ASB Classic. In Lyon, she has defeated Anna Bondar and Viktorija Golubic so far.

Despite a poor performance at the Australian Open, Alycia Parks picked up a huge victory in the round of 16 of the Lyon Open against Petra Martic. The 22-year-old also won the WTA 125 Angers Open towards the end of the 2022 season.

0-0. Only four of Danka Kovinic’s 17 WTA quarterfinal matches (7–10) were played on hard surfaces (3-1). The 22-year-old Alycia Parks, who gave Barbora Krejcikova a tough time in her quarterfinal match in Ostrava (lost 7-6, 6-3), has since won back-to-back 125K indoor titles in Andorra and Angers (France), and she should be feeling very motivated right about now.
