Danielle Collins and Magdalena Frech are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 WTA Guadalajara Open on October 19.
Collins entered this tournament as a heavy favorite after reaching the semifinals of the San Diego Open the previous week. Except for the first game of the encounter, she had no problems during their hour and 11 minute encounter. Danielle Collins defeated Dolehide 6-4, 6-1, saving three of the four breakpoints she faced and breaking her opponent twice in each of the two sets. She overcame the early break with one back in the second game itself and took advantage of her opponent’s nerves while serving to stay in the first set at 4-5. Having raced out to a 5-0 lead in the second set, and despite missing four match points on her opponent’s serve and two more on her own, she won on the seventh.
Yulia Putintseva was 3/5 to win her opener against Frech, but it was her Polish opponent who came out on top. Magdalena Frech won 6-3, 6-4 in a match that lasted an hour and 17 minutes, taking advantage of Putintseva’s poor serving. With Putintseva winning only 57% of her first serves and 44% of her second serves, Frech was able to break her three times during the match. Frech entered the match with only 10 main draw wins in the entire WTA season and one since the start of the US Open. As a result, it was no surprise that she was given 13/10 odds going into the match. A second consecutive win, especially against a player as consistent as Collins, appears to be a distant dream.
