Casper Ruud was in great form last season and ended the last year in fine fashion and will be motivated to be back to his regular good form after having a bad start to the new year. He played at the ATP World Tour Finals recently where he made it to the finals beating the likes of Rublev, Fritz, and Auger-Aliassime on the way. He only lost to Rafa Nadal in the group stage round and then in the finals, he had to settle for second place as Novak Djokovic showed immense caliber to win the match. In the tournaments before that, he made it to the round of 16 stage at the Paris Masters and got knocked out of the Japan Open and Swiss Indoors right in the first round. At the Australian Open and the Mexican Open, he bowed out of the tournament in the second stage itself.
Ilya Ivashka is not an opponent that people will hope can beat the third-seeded Casper Ruud but still is a major threat that Ruud shouldn’t take lightly at all. He has very rarely made it out of the first round in every of the last few tournaments he has played in, from the Australian Open where he lost to van de Zandschulp to the Dallas Open where he lost to Sock. He couldn’t even make it past the qualifiers stage at the Paris Masters and the Vienna Open where he lost to Otte and Nishioka respectively. In the ongoing Miami Open, he beat Altmaier in the first-round matchup by 6-2, 6-1.
