Carreno and Kwon are set to face each other in the first round of the 2023 Adelaide International 2 on Wednesday, January 11.
Pablo Carreno Busta missed both of his slated games at the United Cup last week and will start the new campaign in Adelaide, where he played once in 2020 and advanced to the quarterfinals. The Spaniard had a successful visit to Australia last year, winning four of his five singles matches at the ATP Cup before moving on to the round of 16 at the Australian Open. The 31-year-old had a hit-and-miss 2022 but made up for it by winning the Montreal Masters and making it all the way to the final of an ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona. These accomplishments eventually helped him climb back into the top 15 of the ATP rankings.
To make up for his loss to Tomas Machac in the final qualifying round on Monday, Soon Woo Kwon beat the same opponent in the first round, 6-4, 6-4, and gained entry to the main draw as a lucky loser. The number one seed from South Korea put on two strong performances during the second leg of the ATP Adelaide in 2022, but he was only able to advance to the second round. He defeated eventual runner-up Arthur Rinderknech in the second round after defeating Lloyd Harris in the opening round. Last year, he lost in the second round of 14 straight tournaments at the tour level, and only in the final months of the year in Tokyo, where he met a player going through a similar situation, did this terrible run come to an end.
