Caroline Garcia and Jasmine Paolini will take on each other in the quarter-final of the 2023 WTA Lyon Open on February 3.
When Caroline Garcia faced dangerous indoor hardcourt player Alison Van Uytvanck, she made sure to fully capitalise on the home crowd and defeated her with a score of 2-6, 6-0, 6-1. In the final two sets, she kept the Belgian from holding serve and dominated with 20 winners to just nine unforced mistakes. She overcame a break deficit in the second set of her first round match against Tereza Martincova, winning 6-4, 7-6. She has participated in local competitions for four years running; in 2020, she lost to Alison Van Uytvanck in the quarterfinals, and in 2022, she advanced to the semifinals.
Jasmine Paolini left Australia with a record of 1-3; her lone victory came against Patricia Maria Tig, who is ranked No. 790 in the world. Rebeka Masarova, who finished second in Auckland last month, and 18-year-old Erika Andreeva were two qualifiers she beat in straight sets and at a cost of five games each in Lyon. The Italian has become a proficient hardcourt player. Up until September 2021, she only played one WTA quarterfinal on this surface, but she is about to play her seventh (3-3) in the previous 18 months. She won her first career title at the 2021 Portoroz, recently advanced to the Cluj-Napoca final, and in October took home a W100 title in Spain.
