Greek tennis player and second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas made a strong start to his 2023 ATP Barcelona Open campaign as he brushed Pedro Cachin aside 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday to advance to the round of 16. The Greek returned all of the three break points and recorded win percentages of 85% and 50% on the first and second serves respectively. The second seed will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the next round of the competition.

“I was able to bring good tennis out there on the court,” said Tsitsipas, who is now 17-5 for 2023. “I kept mixing it up. I kept being very aggressive, more than I’m used to, so the whole evaluation is positive. I’m happy with how things evolved over the course of the match. It’s one of those matches I was able to figure out from early on, keep up with the pace, and anything that was being thrown at me I was reacting to it very positively and being very smooth on the court.”

Jannik Sinner beats Diego Schwartzman

At the Barcelona Open on Wednesday, Jannik Sinner maintained composure to defeat Diego Schwartzman and earn his 25th tour-level victory of 2023. On Pista Rafa Nadal, the fourth-seeded Italian prevailed over a typically tenacious Schwartzman, who dug especially deep in the tumultuous second set. After dominating the first set, Sinner won four of the seven serve breaks in the second to complete a one-hour, forty-minute victory in the ATP 500 match.

In order to reach his sixth quarterfinal appearance in eight tournaments at the tour level this year, Sinner will take on Yoshihito Nishioka in the third round. At the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899, the Japanese 16th seed Nishioka earlier defeated David Goffin 6-1, 7-5.

“I think I started very well, especially in return games,” said Sinner. “I tried to stay quite aggressive, made a couple of unforced errors, but I have to remind myself that this is the first round for me. I tried to stay calm and obviously try in the best way in important moments. Now the main focus is to recover for tomorrow, and I restart tomorrow hopefully with better feelings than today. Diego is a very tough player to play against and I am very happy.”

Cameron Norrie downs Pavel Kotov

British tennis player Cameron Norrie displayed a dominant performance in the round of 32 of the Bacelona Open on Wednesday as he got the better of Pavel Kotov 6-1, 6-2. The seventh seed hit two aces, committed two double faults, and returned four out of nine break points to win the fixture. The top ranked Brit will face ninth seed in what promises to be a feisty encounter in the round of 16.

Musetti made short work of Aussie Jason Kubler 6-3, 6-1 on Wednesday to punch his ticket in the last 16. The Italian tennis star smashed a couple of aces and returned five out of nine break points to win the match. He also recorded win percentages 70% and 59% on the first and second serves respectively.
