Aryna Sabalenka has been quite provisional throughout the entire tournament picking up crucial victories en route to the semi-final. After receiving a first-round bye, she faced Liudmila Samsonova winning the match in straight sets and setting up a quarte-final matchup against Marketa Vondrousova. She was on the back foot in the first set but recovered well enough to seal the set. Sabalenka put a lot of pressure on Vondrousova which led to Vondrousova missing many service points. In the second set, Vondrousova was nicely poised with the set level on 5-5, but she had no answers to Sabalenka’s brilliance as the match ended 6-3, 7-5 to the name of the Belarussian.
Begu on the other hand has been a surprise package for the entire tournament beating a couple of favorites. She went past Shelby Rogers in the first match and then slammed Jelena Ostapenko in the second-round matchup. She then faced Veronika Kudermetova in the quarterfinals. Kudermetova was leading the first set 3-1 lead at one point of time but Begu recapitalized in the nick of time to gather all the points in the next eight games. She won the first set and having gained all the confidence and having put the Russian under a lot of pressure, she won the match 7-5, 6-4 setting up a semi-final berth against Sabalenka.
