Anna Kalinskaya recently suffered qualifying-round defeats in Doha and Dubai after losing to Bernarda Pera by scores of 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 and 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, respectively. In the final set, she had a 4-2 advantage over the American and a match point against the Korean. She has a 4-6 record so far this season, going 1-5 in matches that required three sets. In the past two months, the Russian has advanced as far as the second rounds of Adelaide and Hua Hin. This is roughly in line with her yearly form as a whole. She has finished 14 of her last 16 main draw appearances in the first or second round, despite reaching the quarterfinals at the Guadalajara 1000 and Washington DC.
The past two weeks were spent in the Middle East by Lauren Davis. She lost a set and a 5-3 lead before being forced to retire in Doha’s qualifying to Viktoriya Tomova due to a left thigh injury. She beat world No. 32 Jil Teichmann in three sets in Dubai thanks to a lucky loser entry, but then fell to Aryna Sabalenka, 6-0, 6-1, in the following match. The 29-year-old former top 30 player’s best WTA finishes in 2017 were the third round at Miami and the US Open, along with the quarterfinals at the Adelaide and Parma 250 tournaments. So it came as a surprise when, while competing as a qualifier, she won her second career final and first in six years in Hobart last month.
