Anastasia Potapova and Maryna Zanevska will take on each other in the quarter-final of the 2023 WTA Lyon Open on February 3.
In the decisive set of the second round, Anastasia Potapova was ahead of wildcard Clara Burel 2-1 and 40-15 when she awkwardly fell on her right ankle. The Russian appeared to handle all of her opponent’s dropshots just fine after a concerning medical time-out, defeating the French favourite 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. She had to come back from a set down against qualifier and world No. 124 Marina Bassols Ribera on Monday before recording her first back-to-back victories of the year. She didn’t have a successful Australian tour, retiring due to heat illness in Adelaide and losing to Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the second round in Melbourne.
After ending second seed Zhang Shuai’s title defence effort, Maryna Zanevska wins seven games in a row on indoor French courts. She faced just one breakpoint, which she managed to avoid, and overcame the veteran Chinese player, ranked 23rd, 6-2, 6-0, in 68 minutes to earn the highest-ranking victory of her career. At the beginning of the season, she was 0-11 against players ranked in the top 30, but after defeating world No. 27 Elise Mertens in Hobart, she broke the taboo. The Belgian competed in a morbid manner for the majority of the 2022 season, but in recent months, especially after winning her biggest hardcourt title at 125K Rouen in France in October, she has changed her approach.
