In the third round of the 2023 Madrid Masters, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina prevailed in a nail-biting three-set match with the help of the home crowd, which Holger Rune found challenging and constantly tried to distract him. He struggled to finish the game, but the Dane was unable to capitalise, losing 7-6, 5-7, 7-6. Due to his consistent performances in the majority of the events he has taken part in this year, even though he was unable to make up the significant number of points he lost at the Monte Carlo Masters, his ranking has not been significantly impacted. Last week, Borna Coric arrived in Madrid lacking confidence after losing each of his previous five games. He has since changed his luck, though, and has advanced to the round of 16 without dropping a set. With scores of 6-3 6-3 and 7-6 6-3, he easily defeated Hugo Gaston in the second round and had a notable victory over the world’s No. 15-ranked Hubert Hurkacz in the third round. The Croatian No. 1 made a remarkable comeback last August by winning the Cincinnati Masters after an injury layoff of a year, which allowed him to save months of his tennis career. He was able to reenter the top 20 rankings thanks to this victory, which also gave him hope for greater success in 2023. He hasn’t been able to keep up the form and momentum he developed in the second half of 2022, though, as he has struggled to find victories this year.
