Seeded 29th Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has had a disappointing past few weeks and needs to sort some things out to make good use of the Madrid Open. He will be adamant to make a change in fortune and perform well as has not been able to make it past the second stage mark in most of his last tournaments, losing to Halys at the Open Sud De France, and to Tommy Paul at the Australian Open. He made it to the quarter-finals of the Adelaide International 2 thereby losing to Bautista Agut and at the Qatar Open, he made it to the quarter-finals getting knocked out by Auger-Aliassime. At the recently played Estoril Open and Barcelona Open, he made it to the quarter-finals losing to Cecchinato and Alcaraz respectively.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas has not looked quite impressive in the last few months and looks to make a change of form in the Madrid Open. He was knocked out of the first rounds in quite a few tournaments he participated in in the last few months such as the recent Argentina Open where he lost to Carballes Baena, to Cressy at the Australian Open, and to Millman at the Adelaide International 2. At the Barcelona Open and the Monte-Carlo Masters, he lost right in the first round to Emilio Gomez and Struff respectively. At the Cordoba Open, he was finally looking great making it to the semis before losing to Coria, and at the Rio Open, he made it to the quarters losing to Zapata Miralles. In the ongoing Madrid Open, he beat Ivashka in the first-round matchup by 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
