The 19-year-old withstood an offensive barrage from Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff to win 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4.
On Monday night, Carlos Alcaraz’s chances of making it count at Wimbledon were in jeopardy. The 19-year-old did, however, pull through to make it to Wimbledon’s second round for the second time. After a tense four hours and eleven minutes of play on Court 1, the 19-year-old withstood an offensive barrage from Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff to win 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4. Alcaraz, who was competing at Wimbledon for the second time, increased his intensity and dug in, scampered around the baseline to hang on to points, and produced flashes of brilliance in crucial times to improve his five-set record to 5-1.
Alcaraz will next face Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in an effort to make it to The Championships’ third round for the first time. The Spaniard was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in the second round a year ago. Alcaraz, who beat Struff to win his 33rd match of the season, is a different player now after winning a season-high four titles in 2022.
Alcaraz and Griekspoor are scheduled to face each other on Wednesday, June 29 in the second round of the 2022 Championships. The timing of the match has not been decided yet. The Championships is scheduled to begin on June 27 and go on until July 10. There were a number of exciting matches in the first round as the likes of Djokovic, Alcaraz, Murray, Shapovalov and others were in action.
