Sweden

Sweden qualified for the Euro 2020, following six wins and just one defeat in the 10 qualifiers for the edition of the tournament. However, they have been forced to come to terms with a massive blow in recent times after superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic was ruled out of the tournament, having been initially expected to feature. Ibrahimovic picked up a knee injury in May, during AC Milan’s 3-0 victory over Juventus in a Serie A encounter. He was involved in a tussle for the ball before going down in a non-contact injury. The attacker was one of the players fans were looking forward to witnessing. However, coach Janne Andersson will certainly not be unnerved having helped spearhead Sweden’s recent renaissance after taking charge in 2016. His list of achievements includes steering his side to a first World Cup in 12 years, then topping a UEFA Nations League group including Russia and Turkey. Sweden will be hoping to progress from the group stages in the Euros for the first time since 2004. The nation’s best performance in the history of the Euros was witnessed in the 1992 edition, where the team reached the semi-finals. They were the hosts in the edition. Sweden emerged supreme in a group that featured strong teams like England, France and eventual victors Denmark before being edged out 3-2 by Germany in the semis. They however failed to make their presence felt in Euro 2016, having been knocked out in the group stage. At the same time, their performance in the 2018 World Cup having been placed in a group comprising of Germany, South Korea and Mexico was fantastic, to say the least. They topped the group, going on to reach the quarterfinals. RB Leipzig midfielder Emil Forsberg will be one of the players to watch out for. Pacy, creative and physically strong, the Leipzig midfielder will shoulder much of the responsibility for Sweden’s attack. He has a fine shot and will likely be one of the free-kick takers. Krasnodar midfielder Kristoffer Olsson has a toolbox full of dribbles and smart passes that are as effective as they are easy on the eye. Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof will also play a crucial role, considering his positional sense and the anticipation to be in the right place to block shots and clear crosses. Ibrahimovic’s absence might well not be felt considering the presence of striker Alexander Isak, who plays for Real Sociedad. The 21-year-old has scored 16 times in 33 appearances, building on a solid start to life in Spain last year.
