The Czech Republic national football team (Czech: Česká fotbalová reprezentace) represents the Czech Republic in international football. The team is controlled by the Football Association of the Czech Republic (FAČR). Historically, the team participated in FIFA and UEFA competitions as Bohemia and Czechoslovakia. Following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the first international competition of the Czech Republic was the UEFA Euro 1996, where they finished runners-up, and they have taken part in every European Championship since. Following the separation, they have featured in one FIFA World Cup, the 2006 tournament. Czech Republic are heading into their seventh consecutive European Championship. The team coached by Jaroslav Silhavy didn’t have the best of starts to the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign as they lost 5-0 to England at Wembley. But the Czech’s pulled themselves up to finish at second spot in Group A behind the Three Lions. Meanwhile, they also defeated England 2-1 in the reverse fixture. At the Euro 2016 the Czech’s finished a dismal last in the group with a draw against Croatia and two losses against Spain and Turkey. Silhavy’s side had the second best defensive record in the qualifying group as they conceded just 11 goals in 8 matches. Whereas scoring goals has been a problem for them. Finding the back of the net only 13 times. Silhavy’s side plays a high pressing game with a strong defence therefore they play with a 4-1-4-1 or 4-2-3-1 formation. The emphasis is on getting to the attacking third quickly with minimum number of passes. Also they are very strong at set pieces as they have a number of tall players in their squad. The likes of- Tomas Soucek, Alex Kral, Patrick Schik, Michael Kremencik, Zdenck Odrasek and Antonin Barak are good in the air. Key Players West Ham United’s Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal will be the key players in Silhavy’s side. Both of them played a key role in West Ham’s best ever Premier League campaign. Defensive midfielder Soucek’s primary role would be to provide cover to the defence and dictate the play but the 192cm tall player is a serious threat from set pieces. The 26-year-old scored 10 goals in the last Premier League season. Patrik Schick is going to be the key man up front. The striker has scored 19 goals in his last two seasons at Bundesliga. But, because of the way the Czech team is set up he doesn’t get too much of scoring opportunities with the national team as they mostly play counter attacking football. Spartak Moscow’s Alex Krall will be the attacking midfielder along with captain Vladmir Darid who will provide the creative spark going forward. 18-year-old striker Adam Hlozek could be the surprise package. The Sparta Prague player has scored an impressive 15 goals in 19 appearances last season.
