Competing in Birmingham at the Commonwealth Games 2022, following his World Championship debut, Sam Short grabbed the gold medal in the 1500m freestyle and posted a swim of 14:48.54. He also won the silver medal with 3:45.07 in the 400m freestyle. By 2023, at the national championships, he scripted history with a 3:42.64 in the 400m freestyle, becoming a global sensation. He followed it up with a 14:58.90 in the 1500m freestyle. At the Australian Trials, he swam a 3:43.38 in the men’s 400m freestyle.
In the 2023 World Aquatics Championship, Short was on fire as he began with a 3:42.44 and then smashed it with a 3:40.68 as he edged past competitor Ahmed Hafnaoui of Tunisia. This timing was the best in a decade and made him one of the top participants globally. However, in the 800m freestyle, Hafnaoui managed to flip their positions, sealing gold in the finals.
