Sam Short is a freestyle swimmer from Australia who gained fame, owing to shattering age group records before claiming the title of world champion. At the Brisbane Short Course Championships in 2018, he achieved 5 new Brisbane titles, 2 records for both Queensland state and All Comers, and set two national records for 14-year-olds. During the Vorgee Brisbane Short Course event, he smashed his own personal bests. In the 200m freestyle, he bettered his record from 1:49.69 to 1:47.63. Meanwhile, in the 400m freestyle, he improved his record from 3:47.16 to 3:45.58. This performance placed him third nationally, trailing legends like Hackett and Mack Horton.

In 2022, at the Australian Championships in Adelaide, Sam Short showcased a 3:44.34 in the 400m freestyle. However, he stood third, missing a place in the squad for the World Championships. Despite this, he qualified for the Commonwealth Games and booked a place in Budapest with a 1:47.35 in the 200m freestyle. He then recorded a 7:48.65 in the 800 freestyle and booked his participation in the World Championships. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, right after his World Championship debut, Sam clinched a gold in the 1500m freestyle with an impressive 14:48.54 and bagged a silver in the 400 free with a 3:45.07.

In 2023, at the Australian Championships, Sam Short delivered a 3:42.64 in the 400m freestyle, becoming the 10th best globally and 4th in Australia and surpassing Hackett. He also clocked a 14:58.90 in the 1500m freestyle. Later, during the Australian Trials, he registered a 3:43.38 in the 400 free. The World Aquatics Championship 2023 saw Sam lead with a 3:42.44 and then stun with a 3:40.68, defeating Ahmed Hafnaoui by a slim margin. This was the quickest since 2012, placing him close to records held by Paul Biedermann and Ian Thorpe. In the 800m freestyle, while he led initially with a near-best 7:40.90, however, Hafnaoui overtook him in the finals, winning gold.
