Ryan Murphy is an American swimmer and former World Record holder in the 100m Backstroke. He is a four-time Olympic champion and a six-time Olympic medalist overall. He specializes in backstroke and represents the United States on the international level. He was born to Pat and Katy Murphy on July 2, 1995, in Palos Heights, Illinois. Ryan started swimming at a young age. After his parents enrolled him in the sport, he never looked back on his path to becoming a star swimmer. Murphy aspired to be the world’s finest swimmer and worked tirelessly to achieve that goal, which resulted in him winning three gold at the Rio Olympics.

Murphy was a swimmer for the Sharks while he was a student at Bolles School under head coach Sergio Lopez. Murphy established 26 National age group records during his stint with the Sharks in events such as the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes, 200-yard and 400-yard individual medleys, 200-meter butterfly, and 50-yard freestyle. As a member of the Bears’ 200 free relay, American record 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay during his rookie season, Murphy was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year and an NCAA champion. As a rookie at the 2014 NCAA Championships, he won the 100-yard backstroke (44.63) in a school record time and the 200-yard backstroke (1:37.35) in an NCAA record time.

Murphy rose to fame when he swept the backstroke events at the 2016 Summer Olympics, capturing gold medals in both the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke races. With Michael Phelps, Nathan Adrian, and Cody Miller, he also claimed the gold medal in the 4 X 100-meter medley relay. In fact, Murphy’s backstroke relay leg beat the previous world record set by Aaron Peirsol in 2009. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he continued to shine as he was an integral member in the world record gold medal 4×100 m medley relay winning team, alongside Michael Andrew, Caeleb Dressel, and Zach Apple. He also won the silver medal in the 200 meter backstroke and the bronze medal in the 100 meter backstroke in Tokyo.
