Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh made headlines once again as she broke the women’s 400m freestyle world record at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto on March 28, 2023. The 16-year-old completed the race in an astonishing time of 3:56.08, breaking the previous record set by Australia’s Ariarne Titmus by 0.32 seconds. With this achievement, McIntosh is now the Canadian, Commonwealth, and World Junior Record holder in the event.

McIntosh’s success in the 400m freestyle event comes as no surprise, given her impressive record in the sport. She had previously won the silver medal in the 400m freestyle at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, finishing behind the reigning Olympic champion, Ariarne Titmus. Following her recent victory, McIntosh expressed her surprise at breaking the world record, saying, “Going into tonight, I didn’t think the world record was a possibility, but you never know.” Her performance has marked her as one of the rising stars in swimming, with the potential to become a dominant force in the sport for years to come.

Summer McIntosh’s 2023 season So far

The Canadian teenager has had a remarkable start to the year 2023. Earlier this month, she broke three junior world records in three days at the TYR Pro Swim Series. She is also the reigning world champion in the 400m individual medley and the 200m butterfly, after winning both events at the World Championships 2022 in Budapest at the age of just 15. Her performances have made her a promising contender for the upcoming World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, in July, and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Summer McIntosh’s Family

Summer McIntosh comes from a family with a strong swimming background. Her mother, Jill Horstead, competed in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles as part of the Canadian swimming team. In addition, Jill was also a bronze medalist at the Commonwealth Games 1986. McIntosh’s older sister, Brooke, is a champion figure skater who has competed at the 2019 ISU junior worlds, 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Lausanne where she finished fourth, and the 2021 Junior World Championships where she won pairs bronze with partner Benjamin Mimar.
