Gabriela Kimberly García León is a female racewalker from Peru. She won gold medals in the 20-kilometre walk and 35-km walk at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. This made her the first Peruvian world medallist and the first Latin American to earn two titles at the same World Athletics Championships. 12-year-old García started her humble strides towards the world of athletics when she won the Peruvian Race Walking Under-18 Championships and Peruvian U18 Championships. Subsequently, she won the 10 km walk U20 competition at the Peruvian Race Walking Championships three years later, in 2009. In the 5000-meter walk event of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, she finished seventh. At the 2013 Pan American Race Walking Cup, she won the gold medal in the 20-kilometer walk at the age of 19.
García emerged victorious at the 2014 South American Race Walking Championships. Subsequently, García finished the event at the Rio Olympics in 2016 in 14th place. She thought about giving up on professional sports after the Games because of the lack of backing from private businesses. However, the Peruvian fought back and established herself on the international stage. Kimberly had a great start to her 2023 campaign as well. In March she set a world record for a 35-kilometer walk in 2:37:44 at the Dudinska 50. She cut two seconds off the previous record for the distance, demonstrating that 2022 was no flash in the pan. At the 35-kilometer athletic walk at the World Championships in Budapest in August, Kimberly took home the silver medal. Recently she clinched the gold medal in the 20km race at the Pan American Games 2023.
