The National Rifle Association of India has updated its selection guidelines for athletes who are aiming to compete at the Paris Olympics 2024. The revision has mainly focused on reducing the bonus points awarded to Olympic quota winners. What inspired the change was the performance of shooters in the previous two Olympic Games (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020), where despite having a significant lead through bonus points, athletes failed to earn the medals.

Know more about the new policy

In the new policy presented by the National Rifle Association of India, shooters who have secured Olympic quotas in firearm events will now be awarded two bonus points. While participants in air weapons categories will receive one bonus point. This is a notable shift from the earlier practice where up to ten bonus points were granted for significant achievements (earning a medal or a respectable position finish) in World Championships and World Cups. This decision was made during a recent meeting of the NRAI governing body.

The method for calculating the Final Average Score (FAS) has also been revised by the National Rifle Association of India. Now, the FAS will be derived through the average of the top three scores from four Olympic selection trials to which the newly adjusted bonus points will be added. The approach is intended to maintain a recognition of the individual achievements of quota winners, while also reducing the gap between them and other competitors in the Olympic trials.

How are the events segregated?

The air weapons category includes events such as the 10m air pistol and the 10m air rifle. The firearm category encompasses events like the 50m rifle 3-positions, sports pistol, and rapid-fire pistol. Besides this, specific eligibility criteria for the Olympic selection trials scheduled for May have been outlined. These criteria consider various factors such as existing quota holders, domestic rankings, ISSF Qualification Rankings, and participation in ISSF Championships.

What is the significance of the NRAI’s updated policy?

The National Rifle Association of India’s updated policy aims to enhance competitiveness and fairness in the selection process. By adjusting the bonus point system and revising the FAS calculation method, the National Rifle Association of India is working to ensure that the selection for the Paris 2024 Olympics is more equitable, giving a fair chance to all aspirants and raising the standard of competition among India’s shooting athletes.
