The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) has made a significant move to promote inclusivity and diversity in shooting sports. It has allowed shooters with hearing impairment to participate in selection trials alongside able-bodied marksmen and markswomen in the Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) category. The MQS category allows extra two shooters per event to participate in competitions or selection trials to enable them to achieve MQS. However, these shooters will not be entitled to any ranking, medal, or quota place.

The approval was given during the National Rifle Association of India’s (NRAI) governing body meeting. The gathering took place physically for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic broke three years ago. The approval has opened up new opportunities for deaf shooters to showcase their skills and compete at the highest level. This decision will encourage more deaf athletes to take up shooting sports and inspire others to follow their dreams.

The NRAI has also approved the establishment of various committees. This will ensure the smooth conduct of the ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol, Bhopal, which is scheduled later this month. The governing body has finalized the dates for its domestic tournaments, with the national championships starting from November 5. The All India G.V. Mavalankar Shooting Championships must be completed by August, according to the NRAI. The teams for the Asian Cup, which will offer quotas for next year’s Paris Olympics, will be selected before December. This decision provides clarity to the shooters and allows them to prepare accordingly. The shooters can now focus on their training and aim to secure their spots for the Paris Olympics.

What other recommendations have been accepted?

The NRAI has also accepted the recommendations made by the prevention of age fraud committee and prevention of sexual harassment at the workplace committee. These recommendations aim to ensure fair play and provide a safe and secure environment for athletes and officials. The NRAI’s decision to form various committees and finalize the dates for domestic tournaments and the Asian Cup will help in the smooth conduct of events. The ISSF‘s decision is a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and creating a level playing field for all athletes. It sends a powerful message to the sporting community that athletes with disabilities can compete at the highest level and excel in their respective sports. This move will also help in breaking down the barriers that prevent deaf athletes from participating in mainstream sporting events.
