Raiza Dhillon, 19, was raised hearing stories from her great-grandfather about his guns as the only child in the family. The Haryana youngster was reminded of the guns back at her paternal home in Karnal on Saturday afternoon as Dhillon earned India its first women’s skeet quota in history and an 18th Paris Olympics shooting quota in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Kuwait. In the men’s skeet shooting competition, Anant Jeet Singh Naruka secured the 19th quota spot and took home the silver medal. Her mother Gul Dhillon, a sarpanch of the Karnal village, persuaded her to take up tennis, swimming and dances like Kathak and Bharatnatyam after her family relocated to Panchkula.
Raiza made shooting her 12th birthday choice, but she had one requirement. Gul Dhillon, her mother, clarifies. “We first signed Raiza up for 10m Air Rifle competitions, and she also went to Pune’s Gagan Narang Shooting Academy for camps.” Then again, she wanted to use the heavy weapons for shooting. As a mother, I was anxious that the gun’s recoil would damage her, but she didn’t seem to be at all bothered. The shotgun’s placement has left numerous black markings on her right cheek. My father used to question why a girl would be involved in such a sport. Raiza likes it, though, and we have never stopped her from doing it,” the mother adds.
The Haryana child began learning skeet shooting in 2018 under the tutelage of her father’s close friend Amrinder Singh Cheema. Following that, a bronze in the senior skeet event at the 2021 nationals. She won a silver medal at the ISSF Junior World Champions in Changwon, Korea, last year, and she also emerged as the junior national champion.
