Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was born on August 8, 1994, in Nongpok Kakching, Manipur, to a Meitei family, a warrior clan from that area, around 30 kilometers from Imphal city. She identified herself as a Sanamahism devotee but also indicated that she worships Hindu deities. When she was just twelve years old, her parents discovered her strength. When her older brother struggled to even take up a large load of firewood, she could carry it home with ease. Mirabai received her training at the Manipur Sports Academy.
Mirabai’s first significant success was at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where she earned the silver medal in the 48 kg weight division. She qualified for the women’s 48 kg division of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. However, s he was unable to finish the competition because none of her three efforts at the clean & jerk section resulted in a successful lift. She set a competition record by lifting a total of 194 kg (85 kg snatch and 109 kg clean and jerk) in the Women’s 48 kg category at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, California, the United States.
Chanu became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal at the Olympics and the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari with a total lift of 202 kg at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The 27-year-old went on to win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022, her second gold and third medal overall at the multi-sport competition. She had previously lifted a total of 196 kg, including 110 kg in the Clean and Jerk and 86 kg in the Snatch, to win her first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
