The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) has invited five Indian Shooters for the second iteration of the President’s Cup to be held from November 28 to December 4, 2022, in Cairo, Egypt. The Indian contingent comprises Anjum Moudgil who is the only Indian set to feature twice in the competition, after representing the country in the inaugural edition of the tournament, last year.

Besides Anjum, Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil and Swapnil Kusale who clinched the Paris Olympics 2024 recently at the World Championships Rifle/Pistol in Cairo, have also been invited. Rudrankksh claimed the second quota for India in Shooting in the men’s 10m air rifle event, winning the match by 17-13 against Danillo Sollazo of Italy to become the world champion. While Swapnil finished fourth in the medal match of men’s rifle 3 positions, thus earning the third quota for the nation.

Young Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar was also called to feature in the previous edition but he missed out on the opportunity, owing to fitness issues. Aishwary who was in form during the National Games 2022 and many other ISSF events, however, couldn’t replicate his performance at the stage of the ISSF World Championships Rifle/Pistol 2022. His chances for qualification to the ranking round were affected after shooting a low-scoring series in the Standing round. He finished in 14th place despite a score of 589 during the qualification round.

Rhythm Sangwan who has been consistent in the season throughout in the women’s 25m pistol will also feature in the tournament. Rhythm powered India to three silver medal victories at the recently conducted World Championships. She grabbed the silver in Women’s individual 25m standard pistol, Women’s 25m pistol team, and Women’s 10m Air Pistol. With Aishwary, Swapnil, and Anjum, India will have the maximum number of participants (3) this time in the 50m rifle 3 positions event.

Germany is expected to have the largest presence this year, with 12 competitors already qualified. France has ten top-ranked athletes, while the Czech Republic has eight. With the Pan-American Championship set to begin on Monday, November 5, in Lima, Peru, the United States will have a chance to improve the number of qualified shooters.
