The SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, which will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic Games, has introduced innovative augmented reality (AR) technology. The $5 billion (£3.6 billion/€4.4 billion) state-of-the-art arena is presently home to the Los Angeles Rams, who have become the first National Football League team to offer the technology during games. The system, termed ARound, is touted as a next generation fan interaction tool designed to enhance gameday fun with live real-world AR experiences.  The visual effects employ three-dimensional spatial computing to generate information for individual users around the 70,000-capacity Stadium, which will also host football in Los Angeles in 2028.

With the help of a smartphone application, viewers could connect thanks to technology. They can watch elements such as important player callouts shown in 3-D and specific content developed for home fans such as the ‘Rampede’ by pointing their phones towards the Stadium’s screen. Fans may watch the special effects animation on their own devices or on the infinity screen, a 65,000 square meter videoboard that allows them to experience augmented content at important moments such as when the squad enters the field and at touchdowns.

The ARound system was introduced in August by the Minnesota Twins, who offered a variety of activities, including gaming. Viewers at home can also use the technology to enjoy the game by creating a ‘life size virtual stadium in their houses’, according to the creators. At Rio 2016, Olympic Broadcasting Services added virtual reality alternatives to their broadcasts. They were able to deliver augmented reality viewing devices to particular seats at events such as swimming in 2021, at the re-arranged 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The wearer had access to extra data, including immediate findings.

Viewers were able to access AR feeds from a range of angles on a number of sports at this year’s Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, due to extra cameras positioned around venues. During the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the FIFA+ app provided fans with visual upgrades, video options, and additional information and content via smart mobile devices. VAR replays and additional statistics were part of this. The SoFi Stadium will also serve as a host facility for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
