Sports Ministry approves Sreeshankar & Goswami's proposals

Sports Ministry also approved Linthoi Chanambam's request to participate in foreign competitions and training in Poland and Georgia.

The proposals for Murali Sreeshankar, Priyanka Goswami, and Sandeep Kumar to train abroad have been approved by the Sports Ministry. Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, who won silver at the Commonwealth Games, has received permission from the sports ministry to train in Greece for more than a month to prepare for the World Athletics Championship and Asian Games later this year. According to a ministry’s announcement on Friday, the long jumper and his coach Sivasankaran Murali will train in Greece for 32 days at no cost to them thanks to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

Up until the end of this month, Sreeshankar will train at Texas Tech University with renowned coach Keith Herston, with funding provided by TOPS. Racewalkers Priyanka Goswami and Sandeep Kumar’s plans to train and compete in Melbourne, Australia for 16 days were approved by the government’s Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) and Sreeshankar. On May 15, the pair and their coach Gurmeet Singh are anticipated to fly to Australia.

Linthoi Chanambam to participates in foreign competitions

In addition to athletics, Sports Ministry also approved Linthoi Chanambam’s request to participate in foreign competitions and training in Poland and Georgia. Linthoi, the World Cadet Judo Champion, is getting ready for the Gori Cadet European Cup, which will be held in Poland and Georgia. Linthoi had previously received funding from TOPS to train in Japan. Over the course of the 28-day foreign competition, Linthoi will train and compete in Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Poland.

Murali Sreeshankar  

Long jump Indian athlete Murali Sreeshankar was born on March 27, 1999. He currently holds the 8.36 meters national record, set in 2022. At the Patiala Federation Cup in March 2018, Sreeshankar cleared a 7.99 m jump. He was selected for the Indian team to compete in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. But he was forced to withdraw 10 days before the April competition after discovering appendicitis. He underwent an urgent appendix removal and was put on a liquid diet, which left him unable to walk properly and significantly underweight.

Despite having “less strength, speed, and focus” than before the illness, he competed in the 2018 Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Gifu two months later and took home the bronze medal with a jump of 7.47 meters. In the final of the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018, he “struggled with run-up issues and came in sixth with 7.95 meters.

Priyanka Goswami

Priyanka Goswami (born 10 March 1996) represents India in 20-kilometer race walk. Priyanka competed for India and placed 17th at the Tokyo Olympics. She took home the silver medal in a 1000-meter walk at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She won a silver in a 10,000-meter race, becoming the first Indian woman to do so. Priyanka set a new Indian record for the 20 km race. Priyanka won the Indian Racewalking Championship in February 2021 at 1:28:45, earning a spot in the 2020 Summer Olympics. She had previously triumphed in the 2017 Indian Racewalking Championship.

Sandeep Kumar

Racewalker from India who has been approved of training abroad by Sports Ministry, Sandeep Kumar was born on May 1, 1986. At the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China, he participated in the 50 km walk competition. In the 50-kilometer race walk, he competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and placed 35th with a time of 4:07:55. He competed in the 20-kilometer race walk at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and placed 23rd. He currently holds the 50km and 20km race walking national records. At the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022, he won a bronze medal in the men’s 10,000-meter racewalk competition.
