Asian 20km Race Walking Championship 2023: Indian Squad announced

The Asian Athletics Association (AAA) is in charge of organizing the Asian 20km Race Walking Championship 2023.

The Athletics Federation of India has announced the Indian contingent for the Asian 20km Race Walking Championship 2023, which will be held on March 19, 2023 in Nomi, Japan. Following a three-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the race which is an annual race walking competition for athletes representing Asian nations will now be staged for the fifteenth time. The Asian Athletics Association (AAA) is in charge of organizing the competition. Indian race walkers will have the chance to meet the requirements for the World Athletics Championships 2023 and the Paris Olympics 2024 at this Asian 20km Race Walking Championship.

Akshdeep Singh, the Indian race walker, will spearhead his nation’s medal chances in the men’s race at Nomi after qualifying for both the World Championships and the Paris Games 2024 at The women’s competition will feature Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medalist Priyanka Goswami, who also won the Race Walking Nationals last month and qualified for both the World Championships and Paris 2024. Both Akshdeep and Priyanka made the cut for the mega events in the National Open Race Walking Championships that took place last month. In addition to Priyanka Goswami, race walker Bhavana Jat, who competed for India at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, will be heading India’s challenge in the women’s race.

Indian medalists at the Asian 20km Race Walking Championship

The sole Indian gold medalist at the Asian competition was the 2016 Olympian Gurmeet Singh. In the competition, he has also won a silver in 2012 and two bronze medals in 2013 and 2014. The seven medals earned by Indian competitors at the championships – one gold, two silver, and four bronze – place them fourth overall in the medal standings. With a staggering 41 medals, Japan, the competition’s host nation since it began, tops the medal standings. This contains 13 gold medals, 18 silver medals, and 10 bronze medals. China is behind Japan with 11 gold medals, 7 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals.

The Asian Race Walking Championships is an annual race walking competition whose inaugural edition took place in 2006. It included races for senior men (20 km and 50 km) and women (20 km). Competitions were held in two categories until 2008. However, as of now, the future of the 50km Asian Race Walking Championships is uncertain.
