Ganemat Sekhon matches national record at Doha Shotgun World Cup

Ganemat Sekhon, the National Games 2022 winner, equaled the national record by hitting 120 out of 125 targets in the women’s skeet event at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup held in Doha, Qatar. However, despite her exceptional performance, she missed out on the chance to enter the semi-finals when she failed to hit the birds in the shoot-off. Ganemat had missed four of the first 23 targets but then shot 99 straight, impressing the crowd with her precision.

Unfortunately, Ganemat Sekhon missed one of the last three targets in the fifth round, which put her in a tie with four other competitors for the last four places in the next stage. She eventually placed ninth in the event at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Doha. Meanwhile, Kimberly Rhode of the United States, the former World and Olympic champion, won her 11th World Cup gold medal in skeet. In the final, she defeated her compatriot Samantha Simonton 6-5 in the shoot-off after both had hit 38 targets.

What Happened in the Men’s skeet event?

In the men’s skeet event, it was a high-scoring affair. Anantjeet Singh Naruka finished in 32nd place out of 114 competitors with a score of 120. Gurjoat Khangura also hit 120 targets, earning him 36th place, while veteran shooter Mairaj Ahmad Khan placed 55th with a score of 119. Khan had shot 74 out of 75 targets in the first three rounds but missed five targets in the last two rounds. Sheeraz Sheikh, who was competing in the ranking points section, hit 121 out of 125 targets. The Rio Olympics 2016 gold medalist Gabriele Rossetti of Italy claimed the men’s event as he shot a 39 to eventually win the gold in the medal match.

About the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Doha

India fielded a 14-person team to the ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2023, which began on March 7 in Doha, Qatar. The ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Doha took place after the one in Rabat in January of this year. The first stage, however, had been missed by the Indian shooters. Over 450 shooters from 63 different nations are competing in individual and team competitions in Doha. Doha’s ISSF World Cup will end on March 12. One can follow the ISSF World Cup through its YouTube channel. The skeet mixed team events are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. While the trap men’s and women’s competitions will be held on March 11. The Trap Mixed team events is set to take place on the concluding day of the tournament, i.e., on Sunday, March 12.
