Services Niraj Kumar defeated Tokyo Olympian and Junior World Champion Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar 17-11 to win the gold medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions at the National Games 2022. Another Olympian Deepak Kumar won the bronze medal with a score of 403.0 in the ranking match. Although Aishwary topped the ranking round scoring a total of 407.0 in the ranking round, Niraj got the better of him in the gold medal match. This is Aishwary’s third medal in the multi-sport event, having won a silver in the 10m air rifle mixed team and bronze in 10m air rifle individual event. Swapnil S Kusale (399.8) from Maharashtra finished fourth in the event. Aishwary, Niraj, and Swapnil comprise the Indian squad heading to Cairo, Egypt, for the World Championships from October 12 to 25.
In the men’s 10m air pistol, Vijayveer Sidhu produced a clinical performance against Shiva Narwal 17-5 to clinch the gold medal. Shiva who has been one of the most consistent shooters of the country displayed excellent performance throughout, topping both ranking (253.5) and qualification (588) until the gold medal playoff. While, Uttar Pradesh’s Yuvika Tomar overshadowed Rhythm Sangwan to emerge the champion of the women’s 10m air pistol event. Tokyo Olympian Manu Bhaker exited the competition with a sixth place finish in the ranking match.
In the skeet events, promising shooter Ganemat Sekhon of Punjab shot a magnificent 31 to claim the Women’s skeet title ahead of Telangana’s Rashmi Rathore (25). The men’s skeet event was won by Amrinder Singh Cheema of Punjab who shot 37 against Kuldeep Sanyasi (32) to take the title. The trap events are scheduled to take place from October 5, 2022.
